When strange beasts or other odd occurances happen a small group of people with no official standing set out to investigate them: Manjome, Jun; helicopter and small airplane pilot for Hoshikawa Air Service and an amateur sciene fiction writer flies the team around Japan. Edogawa, Yuriko a reporter writes up their adventures for the Daily News. She is the only female in the group. Togawa, Ippei youngest member of the team works with Jun. at Hoshikawa Air Service.
Professor Ichinotani a renowned scientist sometimes aids them (episodes 3, 4, 8, 12, 13, 22, 25, 27, 28). The Professor will eventually go on to be instrumental in forming the Japanese branch of the international Science Special Search-Party aka the Science Patrol, as seen in the sequel to Urutora Q (Ultra Q), Urutoraman (Ultraman). Edogawa, Yuriko boss at the newspaper News Desk Editor, Seki assigns her to the stories and hires her friends at Hoshikawa Air Service to fly her around.

Unlike other tokusatsu series each episode ends not with "TO BE CONTINUED" but with "THE END" as each is a stand alone story, with the five main characters being involved in each the only connection.
On October 15, 2019 Ultra Q was released on Blu Ray, by Mill Creek Entertainment, in Japanese with English subtites
